- The official diplomatic relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Indonesia began in 1976.
- The Embassy of Indonesia was inaugurated in Abu Dhabi on 28 October 1978 at the level of Charge d'affaires. Indonesia also has a Consulate General in Dubai since February 2003, and a Trade Promotion Office which was activated in February 2003 in addition to an investment promotion office which was opened in 2010.
- The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Jakarta was inaugurated in Jakarta on 10 June 1991, the Consular Office of UAE was opened in Jakarta on August 2014, and the Military Attaches Office was opened on April 2019, while the UAE Red Crescent office in Jakarta was opened in 1997.
