  • The Bilateral Relations between the UAE and Japan was one of the first countries to recognize the UAE as an independent state on December 3, 1971. 
  • The two countries established their diplomatic relations on May 6, 1972. The UAE opened its embassy in Tokyo on December 20, 1973, while Japan opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi on April 7, 1974.
  • The UAE-Japan relations go back to the period before the establishment of the UAE as a state. Abu Dhabi participated in the Osaka EXPO 1970, when His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed AI Nahyan, President of the UAE, attended the exposition in his capacity as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. 
  • The trade relations of the two countries go back further to the mid of the twentieth century. The UAE's founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan AI Nahyan, visited Japan on a State visit in May 1990. 
  • The current Emperor of Japan, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Naruhito, visited the UAE in January 1995 while he was the Crown Prince of Japan.
  • The UAE and Japan have been working hard to build a more robust and diverse relationship for a long time. Economic cooperation is expanding into many different fields such as airline, tourism, space, culture, education, medical service, and environment, with significant achievements in all these fields. 
  • UAE is Japan's 2nd largest oil supplier and a significant exporter of natural gas and aluminum. The UAE is Japan's safe, stable, and reliable energy and strategic and cooperative partner in various fields. 
  • More than 4,000 Japanese nationals live and work in the UAE, the largest number in the Middle East and North Africa.
  • In addition, there are more than 400 Japanese companies operating in the UAE. Space cooperation with Japan has seen an increase since the first launch of “Khalifa Sat” from Tanegashima in 2018 and then the launching of UAE’s first interplanetary Probe, “The Hope Probe”, to Mars, July 2020. The Hope Probe reached its Mars Orbit on February 9, 2021.
