- Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Rwanda and the United Arab Emirates were established in 1995.
- In March 2018, H.H Sheikh Abdalah Bin Zayed UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation opened the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates to the Republic of Rwanda in Kigali. His Highness was accompanied by H.E Reem Al Hashimy State Minister for International Cooperation.
- In June 2018, H.E. Mr. Hazza Alqahtani presented his Letters of Credence as the first resident Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates in Kigali, to the President of the Republic of Rwanda H.E. Paul Kagame. This important sign highlighted the development of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Rwanda and United Arab Emirates of that year.
- In February 2019, the President of the Republic of Rwanda led a ministerial delegation and attended the World Government Summit 2019 in Dubai.
